Competition time!

Hey Guys,

It’s begun! Our fundraising campaign is up and running and we are really enjoying get out and about spreading our sweetness. Since my last update we’ve been busy here at Sherbet Lemon Theatre running our first competition, Guess the number of Sherbet Lemons in the jar! £1 a go, guess how many are in the jar and with the right guess you could win, it’s as simple as that.

We’ve been set up around the university campus, making ourselves recognisable by wearing yellow, after all we are the Sherbet Lemons, and our brand new company t-shirts. So far we have located ourselves in Zing café, The University Library and the Student Union reception promoting our competition and our company in the process. By placing ourselves around the campus we have been able to promote our brand to a wider audience and attract interest in our company and show.

Costume insight

Hey Everyone! I’ve recently created a mood board so that I can present it to the other members of Sherbet Lemon Theatre and they can have a better understanding of the style and colour scheme I have been imagining for our costume. Here you can see blue as the primary colour then a mixture of whites and greys. As I previously mentioned I wanted blue costumes as it’s the colour suggested for the best sleep but I thought having everyone in just blue may have been a bit too much as there will be eight performers in total. Therefore, I thought it would be nice to have a mixture of different shades and few natural colours as well. We have recently began exploring the idea of having a main character in our piece, to give it more structure and narrative. The audience will be aware of our main character from the very opening scene, this character will be wearing a blue eye mask, while they others will be wearing black. I originally thought about the main character wearing a dressing gown, but thought this would not be a practical choice, due to the movement scenes performed in our production. This will create a visual that the audience can recognise and know that character is different.

Set Designer

Hello There!

I am Amanda, and I am the set designer for Sherbet Lemon Theatre. Although I love to be arty and creative, I have never put these talents to set designing and set building before. So, this process will be very new to me. I’m very excited to see where the set will go and what the final product will be.

I intend to translate the quirkiness of the company over to the design of the set, with creative elements to promote the sweet and sour of sleep, and the company itself.

More soon to follow from the Sherby Lems to appease your sugary cravings.

Bye for now.

Hayley’s Bedtime Routine

My bedtime routine stays pretty much the same every single night. I start downstairs watching something really trashy on TV with my housemates, then, once I get tired I go upstairs to start my proper bedtime routine. The first step is to pick out a nice pair of pyjamas. I am a self confessed pyjama person, so I have plenty to chose from. I then go to the bathroom to: have a wee, brush my teeth, wash my face and take my tablets. I then snuggle up under my duvet and start scrolling through my phone. I know you’re not really suppose to go on your phone before bed, but it makes me sleepy! Once I feel tired enough I turn my light of and go to sleep.

Words and Workshops.

Hi everyone.

Just thought I’d update you on our progress over the last couple of weeks. We have been getting many of our scene ideas up on their feet and have a structure for our show, The Truth About Bedtime…

Emelia and I were very fortunate to attend a dramaturgy workshop with Tom Cornford from The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama last week, which was amazingly helpful. Tom emphasied that the three things that are key to a performance are an anchor, a question and structure. We realised that our structure has to be cyclical, as that echoes the sleep cycle which structures our performance and though we still don’t have a set ending, we know that we want it to reflect the starting scene of our piece.

Tom also challenged us to analyse the relevance of every element of our performance and think metaphorically about how we portray certain things or events. For example, rather than explaining what happens in every stage of sleep to our audience we could somehow show it, through physicalisation or technology. This led to us thinking about the manipulation of sound and how one track could be distorted to represent how a person breathes in each stage of sleep.

Our main issue at the moment is our lack of verbatim material to work with, as we want the words of various people to be the main focus of our performance. In order to conduct interviews, we have had to develop an ethics form which took a long time to be approved. We are now starting to conduct interviews (which have been so interesting) but they take a long time to type and edit. However, this week I have managed to piece together a speech on sleep paralysis, which we plan to work on in Wednesday’s rehearsal, so I’m very excited to see how that will turn out.
